Humanitarian Communication Thesis Prize 2019

We are very pleased to invite you all to attend the Humanitarian Communication Thesis Prize 2019 on Thursday November 21 in CREA Amsterdam. Come and join the award ceremony for the best MA thesis written on the representation of the Global South, including Pecha Kucha presentations of the selected students. The event is free of charge and open for all to join!

SCREENING OF SHORT FILM (17.05-17.30 hrs)
Gundah Gundala (2013) directed by Wimar Herdanto
+ Introduction and discussion by Arnoud Arps (Leiden University – Faculty of Humanities and University of Amsterdam)

Gundah Gundala is an Indonesian short film showing a conversation between Gundala – a lightning powered local superhero – and a stranger about Gundala’s anxiety, since his job as a superhero is being taken by other superheroes from foreign countries.

Wimar Herdanto is a filmmaker and video artist graduated from the Department of Communication Airlangga University, Surabaya. Learn to make movies when joined Kine Klub in FISIP UNAIR. Currently teaches film and design in the Department of Communication Airlangga University, Surabaya. Incorporated and being active in the film community called Komunitas Penonton based in Surabaya, Indonesia. Also, he still producing a commercial video.

Arnoud Arps is a lecturer in Dutch Studies at the Centre for the Arts in Society, Leiden University, and a PhD candidate in Film Studies at the Department of Media Studies of the University of Amsterdam. His PhD is situated in the fields of memory studies, postcolonialism, travel studies and mobility studies, with the Dutch East Indies and Indonesia as geographical focus. Since 2019 he is an editor of Indische Letteren, the academic journal of the Working Group Indo-Dutch Literature.

The award for the best thesis as well as the award for the best Pecha Kucha presentation will be decided by a jury consisting of Gabriel Ramirez Acevedo (board member IDleaks, Development Studies, UvA), Leonie Schmidt (Media Studies, UvA), Tine Davids (Anthropology, RUG) and Emma Vogt (winner of the IDleaks Thesis Prize last year)
