HUMANITARIAN COMMUNICATION THESIS PRIZE 2018

We are very pleased to invite you all to attend the Humanitarian Communication Thesis Prize 2018 on Thursday November 29th in CREA Amsterdam. Come and join the award ceremony for the best MA thesis written on the representation of the Global South, including Pecha Kucha presentations of the nominated students and the screening of Gifts from Babylon, a short film on the psychological impact of illegal Africa-EU migration through the eyes of a Gambian return-migrant. The event is free of charge and open for all to join!

SCREENING OF ‘GIFTS FROM BABYLON’ (17.05 hrs)
Gifts from Babylon (2018, ’24) is a short narrative film exploring the psychological impact of Africa-EU migration through the lens of a Gambian return-migrant. The film captures the personal conflicts that arise when Modou, a deported refugee, returns to his home country after having lived illegally in Europe for five years. Suffering from intense flashbacks of his illegal migrant journey, he wonders what has become of him…

Gifts from Babylon, a Dutch-Gambian co-production, received its world premiere at the Nederlands Film Festival in September 2018 and is now entering the international film festival run. The film’s producer, Dr. Emiel Martens (IDleaksUniversity of Amsterdam / Universiteit van AmsterdamErasmus University Rotterdam), will be present to introduce the film and do a brief Q&A.

5. Tjeerd Rienstra with his thesis ‘Translating the Virtual to the Real On the Influence of Social Class on Facebook Use in Brazilian Environmentalism’ (University of Amsterdam / Universiteit van Amsterdam / CEDLA: Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation)

 

6. Marleen Spieker with her thesis ‘Migrants’ Experiences and Stories: A Gender Analysis of Urban Poverty among Young Rural-Urban Migrants in Addis Ababa’ (Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University)

 

7. Emma Vogt with her thesis ‘Engendering Empowerment of Women Garment Workers?’ (Wageningen University & Research)

 

8. Shuai Zhang with his thesis ‘Lost in Digital World: Chinese Tourists in Morocco’ (Erasmus University Rotterdam)

 

The award for the best thesis as well as the award for the best Pecha Kucha presentation will be decided by the 3-headed jury consisting of Wouter Oomen (IDleaksUniversiteit Utrecht), Johannes von Engelhardt (UvA) and Alana Osbourne (UvA).
